In this masterclass Verity will teach processes that she uses in her own practice. You will learn about and use advanced slab building techniques in order to create sculptural vessel forms. You will get the chance to experiment with cutting and altering your works to create forms with recesses, angles and curves. This workshop is best suited to those who have previous experience working with clay. Verity Howard (BA Hons Three Dimensional Design, Manchester School of Art, 2015) is an artist who uses clay as a medium for drawing and monoprinting to create sculptural, slab built, ceramic forms. These works explore mystery, trigger memories, generate atmosphere and evoke a sense of place. Verity takes inspiration from the landscape, history and culture surrounding her in rural Herefordshire. The workshop will start with a demonstration of slab building techniques and instructions on how to begin creating sculptural vessel forms. You will then start slab building your own piece of work with Verity’s guidance. LUNCH Verity will demonstrate how to cut and alter slab-built works and you will then get to experiment with these techniques on your own vessel. Lastly Verity will teach methods for refining both the surface and form of the works and you can explore using these processes on your own forms. At the end of the day you will have made your own sculptural vessel form. This masterclass will help in developing your knowledge, skills and confidence, allowing you to create more advanced and refined slab-built works. As a result of this workshop hopefully you will be inspired to continue developing these techniques in your own practice.
